This course explores the representation of race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality within multiple forms of visual culture, including film, video, and mass media. In particular, we will examine the politics of representation in visual culture produced by and about queer communities of color. Drawing on queer studies, feminist studies, ethnic studies, visual culture studies, and film studies, this course will introduce students to the burgeoning interdisciplinary field of queer of color studies. Throughout the course, students will develop their skills of visual analysis, which they will integrate with their analysis of written texts.

This course is designed to introduce students to the academic field and cultural contexts of Queer Studies through a focus on race and sexuality as identities/locations/markers positioned within the social structure of the United States. Our aim is to understand major concepts and vocabulary in Queer Studies, to situate and assess human experience within diverse theoretical frameworks, and to interrogate assumptions about sexuality and race as categories of identity.
